NIPGR is Working to Develop New Tomato Varieties (SLDEAED23 & SLDEAED35)

According to the prediction of the food and agriculture organization of the United Nations. The world population will grow from 6.8 billion to 9.1 billion by 2050. For this scientist will need to develop new varieties of crops giving higher yields.

Scientists at the National Institute of Plant Genome Research in New Delhi have been working to develop tomato varieties, which provide higher yields even under adverse environmental conditions.

New Tomato Varieties

In fact, they have successfully identified certain genes that can help make a tomato crop variant tolerant to a variety of stresses like drought, salinity, cold and infestation.

With the annual production of 16 thousand metric tons of tomato, India is the second-largest producer of tomato in the world after China. Owing to its unique flavour tomato has become one of the most important components of several Cuisines, which makes it an important crop.

On the other hand tomato crops facing significant losses due to two major threats, the first thread or biotic comes from Attack by living organisms such as insects, pests, bacteria, fungi and viral infections.

The second threat or abiotic stress is a threat from environmental conditions such as extreme heat, high humidity, Draught, waterlogging or high soil salinity, which is termed as abiotic stress.

What is NIPGR

A failure to manage these stresses causes financial losses to farmers and agriculture Allied sectors. Now scientists at the National Institute of Plant Genome Research (NIPGR) in New Delhi have come up with a potential solution for this problem.

Usually plant stress is defined as any situation of factors including living or nonliving things which affect the normal growth of a plant. Plant stress is mainly divided into forms, biotic and abiotic stress.

Biotic stress is a situation caused due to the living organisms and abiotic stresses caused due to non-living stress. Every living cell follows a pattern known as the central dogma of life, where genetic information is transferred from DNA to RNA and RNA is d-coded into proteins.

Develop New Tomato Varieties

Proteins are in Ultimate expression of genetic information and they are called the building blocks of the body. Stress affects this process and ultimately damages yields. However, certain species do survive in harsh conditions and managed to grow because they have specific genes known as stress tolerance jeans.

With great efforts and a series of experiments scientists at NIPGR Under the guidance of Dr Manoj Prashad have identified two genes named SLDEAED23 and SLDEAED35 in tomato.

These jeans make tomato plants tolerant against a variety of stresses such as viral, bacterial infections, drought conditions, heat, cold and high salt concentration.

The effectiveness of stressed tolerance genes of tomato are confirmed by inserting them into stress susceptible plants where overexpression of SLDEAED23 and SLDEAED35 converted stress acceptable plants to stress-tolerant one.
